The Future of Beauty Is Nervous-System Regulation

For decades, beauty has focused on correcting the visible effects of stress.

The next generation of beauty will focus on helping people regulate the biological systems that create those effects in the first place.

Sleep. Stress. Skin. Mood. Cognition. Recovery.

These systems do not operate in isolation. Increasingly, research is revealing the connections between the nervous system, emotional wellbeing, skin health, sensory experience, and daily rituals.

At Children of Earth's RESET programme, neuroscientist Dr. Claudia Aguirre and herbalist Arabella Nesselrode are exploring how neuroscience, herbal medicine, neurocosmetics, hospitality, and sensory wellbeing can work together to support modern resilience.

Meet the founders

RESET was born from my own experience navigating a high-pressure corporate environment. Over time, relentless deadlines and overloaded systems led to panic attacks, sleep disruption, chronic stress, and a nervous system that felt permanently switched on. While support services were available, much of the help focused on documenting symptoms rather than providing practical tools that could change how my body was responding to stress.

What fascinated me was how these effects weren't confined to the mind alone. The stress showed up everywhere: in sleep quality, energy levels, emotional resilience, cognitive performance, and even skin health. The skin became particularly interesting to me because it is one of the few organs where the effects of stress can often be seen as well as felt. Many people understand stress intellectually, but they often first notice it physically: through disrupted sleep, skin flare-ups, tension, fatigue, emotional reactivity, or difficulty concentrating. These experiences made me increasingly curious about the biological relationship between stress, skin health, and overall wellbeing. That realisation led me to explore the growing body of research around the brain-skin connection, nervous-system regulation, sensory wellbeing, and herbal medicine.

Around the same time, Dr. Claudia Aguirre was exploring many of these themes from a neuroscientific perspective in Los Angeles. Through her work on the brain-skin connection, neurotransmitters, and cognitive wellbeing, as well as projects such as Opus Manus - which encourages mindful handwriting as a way of keeping important neural pathways engaged in an increasingly digital world - she had been examining how everyday rituals can shape our cognitive and emotional health. Her neuroscience journal and broader work around brain health reinforced a belief we shared: that many of the small daily habits people overlook can have a meaningful impact on wellbeing over time.

What Claudia's work continually reinforced for me was that wellbeing is rarely created through dramatic interventions. More often, it is shaped by the small behaviours we repeat every day:  how we sleep, how we move, how we write, how we touch our skin, what plants we surround ourselves with and how we respond to stress over time.

After co-creating our hand care product, when Claudia and I met in London, our conversations quickly moved beyond skincare and into a much broader discussion about modern stress, nervous-system dysregulation, sensory overload, and the gap between what people are experiencing and the tools available to help them. We found ourselves asking a simple question: what would happen if neuroscience, herbal medicine, sensory rituals, hospitality, sleep science, and skincare were designed as one connected system rather than separate experiences?

That conversation ultimately became the foundation for RESET.

"Beauty is moving away from the pursuit of perfection and toward the pursuit of regulation. In an increasingly overstimulated world, the brands and experiences that matter most will be those that help people recover, adapt, and feel more at home in their own bodies."
